May goslings

May goslings
In Cumberland, Westmorland, and the northern parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire, 'May Goslings' are the equivalent of *April Fools elsewhere, the day for the hoaxing being 1 May. The custom, first reported in 1791, was still flourishing in the 1950s. The tricks must stop by midday; anyone forgetting this is taunted:
May Gosling's dead and gone, You're the fool for thinking on
   (Opie and Opie, 1959: 256-7)
